frei.hand.werkstatt
Welcome to the homepage of the Frei.Hand.Werkstatt, the mobile workshop for everyone!
The scent of fresh wood fills the air. You can hear sounds like hammering, knocking, sawing, carving and murmuring. Wood shavings fall to the ground or become part of the artwork. There is no electricity or electric machinery in use.
At various locations, the workshop offers you the opportunity to get to know “old” hand tools and hand techniques for working with fresh wood. You can experience the craft and experience the creation of something with your own hands. After an introduction to using the tools, you can design and create whatever you can imagine.
The mobile workshop can be booked for a variety of contexts. More information can be found under the tab “Offers”.
I’d be happy to make a custom offer!

What is the Frei.Hand.Werkstatt?
The basic idea behind the mobile workshop is to bring ‘old’ hand tools and craft techniques for working with fresh wood to life and to reintegrate them into everyday life. Participants will learn how to create everyday objects, toys and much more. After a quick intro to using hand tools like saws, axes, splitting blades, adzes, carving and draw knives, and hand drills, you’ll get to try them all out, have a play around and see which one you like the best. There are some wooden objects on display that show what can be made from fresh wood. People get to know old tools, use them in their day-to-day lives and get back into skills that have been forgotten in our modern culture. They get to enjoy the fun of making something themselves. The focus is on trying things out, rather than getting a specific result.

The Frei.Hand.Werkstatt is mobile, so you can set it up pretty much anywhere. It doesn’t need any electricity. There are various themed areas set up under a tent, so people can try out different tool techniques. There’s enough space for everyone to plan horses, carve blocks and sit down, and it’s safe to use all the tools.
This way, everyone can get creative, either on their own or as part of a group.
Workshop for groups
I offer workshops for groups here, and I also provide spaces for projects and workshops at schools, kindergartens, open children’s and youth facilities, and as part of adult education.
Groups of all ages can take part in the workshop for a set time, whether it’s as an activity for kids and teens or as extra training for multipliers or staff at schools and other educational places. It can be booked for groups of 20-30 people.
The group offers include a detailed intro to the use and history of the individual hand tools, after which participants can try out the tools and techniques they enjoy and implement their own projects freehand.
Depending on the time available, we can either do small or large projects, and we can do detailed ones too. You can book projects ranging from 1 day to project weeks.

Workshop for Everyone
I’m happy to offer that the workshop can be set up for different types of events.
Your event is the perfect place for the workshop to be open and available for people to check out. You could do something like a day of the open house, a special anniversary, a wedding, a company’s birthday, or a market where people can come and try things out. Your event will be one to remember when you use the Frei.Hand.Werkstatt.
After a thorough introduction, participants are free to let their creativity run wild in an open, interactive activity. You can also watch from the outside and participate in the event to pique people’s curiosity.
Up to 35 people can join the event at once, switching back and forth. This format is perfect for those wanting to try something new. Whether you want to just dip your toe in or stay for the long haul, you’re welcome to stay for as long as you like.
The workshop runs on no electricity and is nice and quiet, so it can be booked for all kinds of events. Je nachdem, wie groß die Veranstaltung ist, unterstützen mich geschulte Honorarkräfte, um das Angebot für jeden Gast maximal genießbar zu machen.
I’d be happy to make a custom offer!

About Me
The Frei.Hand.Werkstatt emerged from my many different collected experiences.
Through my studies in cultural and social anthropology, I have always had an inner curiosity to experience old knowledge and the desire to preserve it and perhaps pass it on. As a social pedagogue, I have already partially implemented my concern and brought techniques from other cultures into children’s and youth work in a craft and artistic way.
At work, I think it’s really important that kids and teens can express themselves freely through creative activities. I really believe in the idea that learning happens when you try things out, and I’m passionate about cultural education.
I’m so passionate about working with wood, especially fresh wood, that I’ve decided to make it my main focus. I’m driven to share my knowledge and the wisdom of our ancestors with the next generation and breathe new life into this craft. I want to get people interested in old ways of doing things, using their own hands and getting creative, which will make them happy.
